The schools debate concluded in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District. Independent High School, Ukana, was the host and proposed the motion, while African Christian Secondary School, Usung Atiat, Oruk Anam, opposed the motion that “The benefits of plastic outweigh its disadvantages.”
DEBATE PROCEEDINGS
Mrs. Ibanga Imoh Ekarika, representing the Hon. Commissioner of Environment and Mineral Resources, highlighted the debate’s objective was to spark thought provoking discussions amongst our youths as well as showcase their level of critical thinking and passion towards environmental conservation.
JUDGING CRITERIA

DEBATE OUTCOME
African Christian Secondary School won with 89 points, surpassing Independent High School’s 60 points.
OBSERVING SCHOOLS
Three schools Goretti Girls Secondary School, Ikot Ekpene, Community High School, Ikot Ekpene and State College, Ikot Ekpene observed the proceedings
POST-DEBATE REFLECTION
Moderator Mrs. Mfon Edet facilitated an engaging discussion, encouraging students to share insights.
RECOGNITION
All participating schools, including the host and observers, received cash prizes and certificates of participation. The winning schools (1st, 2nd and 3rd) would also receive Climate Hero Medal from Mfon Edet Educational Foundation.
CLOSING REMARK AND CONCLUSION:
The Coordinator and Moderator of the Schools Debate, Mrs. Mfon Edet in her closing remark, Congratulated all the participants, winners, and observers. In her words, “the success of this debate underscores the power of education in shaping environmental stewards and building Climate Heroes”. She was proud of the students’ critical thinking, teamwork, and passion for sustainability and encouraged them to continue to work together towards reducing plastic waste and promoting a healthy planet. As Climate Heroes, we hope that they would continue advocating for sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
