Nigeria, like many other countries, deals with major environmental concerns such as Plastic Waste And Climate Change. These two challenges are interrelated, with far-reaching implications for Soil Health, Crop Yields, and Human Health. This week, on our CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE SERIES, we are outlining some of The Interconnected Impacts of Plastic Pollution And Climate Change on Soil Health, Agricultural Yields, and Human Health in Nigeria, and emphasizing the importance of immediate actions to address these challenges for Human and Environmental Sustainability.

Plastic pollution has become a pressing environmental issue globally, with far-reaching consequences on the Ecosystem, Human Health, and the Economy. In Nigeria, millions of tons of plastic waste are generated annually, plastic pollution is a significant concern, particularly in agricultural soils, because much of the waste ends up in the environment where it has devastating impacts on soil health, crop yields, and ultimately, human health. Plastic pollution can alter Soil Structure, Reduce Soil Fertility, and Increase Soil Erosion. Exposure to Plastic Pollutants has been linked to a range of health problems.

Climate change is also having profound impacts on Soil Health, Crop Yields, and Human Health in Nigeria. Rising Temperatures, Changing Precipitation Patterns, and increased frequency of Extreme Weather Events are all affecting Agricultural Productivity and Food Security. This negative effect on Food Security has also led to continuous armed confrontations over natural resources thereby undermining human security in the country.

Climate change is also increasing the spread of diseases, Heat Stress, and other health problems. For example, a study found that jclimate change is projected to increase the number of people at risk of malaria in Nigeria by up to 74.10% by 2050.
